We believe in the concept of lifelong learning and the notion that learning should be a rewarding and enjoyable experience for all children. Through our teaching we equip children with the skills, knowledge and understanding necessary to be able to make informed choices about the important things in their lives. We believe that appropriate teaching and learning experiences help children to lead happy and rewarding lives.
As creative thinkers and responsive listeners our vision is leading to the development of a thematic curriculum in which the nurturing of lifelong learning skills become a key feature and where we prepare children for future learning on the threshold of Key Stage 3.
Year 6 Skills
Skills in oracy, reading, writing and numeracy will be developed throughout Year Six. A key element in our curriculum is to value the skills of oracy. We consider it of vital importance that our children. Most importantly, we want our curriculum to help the children develop the ability to explore and express ideas through language and to communicate their needs and feelings to others. It is the development of these skills, in all citizens upon which society ultimately depends. To use discussion in order to learn; they should be able to elaborate and explain clearly their understanding and ideas. The quality and variety of language that pupils hear and speak are essential for developing their vocabulary, grammar and the understanding of reading and writing.
By the end of Year Six all pupils read fluently, with confidence, in any subject, in order to develop a love of learning. Also, to equip them with the skills needed in order to be a confident member of society.
At the end of Key Stage 2, our children can effectively articulate and communicate ideas in their writing which will show clarity; an awareness of their audience; the purpose of context and an increasing knowledge of vocabulary and grammar.
Our pupils have a conceptual understanding of the basics of maths and are able to recall their knowledge rapidly and accurately. Pupils can follow a line of enquiry, giving a justification for their approach. By applying the maths to a variety of problems and persevering in seeking solutions, we encourage our children to use their mistakes and efforts to progress in their learning.
